WP1 - Black shale

The risk associated with temporary storage of black shale is one of the problems that is being investigated, both via large scale, long term container experiments and through a desk study where data from relevant projects is being compiled.

The environmental risk associated with the presence of a small amount of black shale mixed in with other masses is being looked in to. This is highly relevant as it is not always possible to remove black shale from surrounding masses.Container experiments, column experiments and the development of a model are being used as tool to investigate this.

Uncertainties in load-bearing capacity and durability of foundations with piles in black shale will also be focused on, as existing guidelines for engineering design of piles under such conditions are not adequate. Furthermore, the risk and probability of swelling in black shale will be examined as this is another factor that is not sufficiently covered in existing guidelines and it has potentially large consequences for existing and new constructions.

The results from all this work will provide knowledge that could lead to environmental benefits and reduced costs and uncertainties when working in black shale.
