Tsunami risk model

A tsunami risk model will be developed based on the numerical modeling results (flow depths, current velocities, and fluxes) and the laboratory analysis providing information on factors leading to the damage or collapse of buildings and infrastructure as described above.

The tsunami risk model will focus on a quantitative assessment of the structural, socio-economic, and ecological vulnerability and will be validated against field data from Japan and other potential benchmark data. In addition to the outcomes from the numerical modeling and the laboratory analysis, GIS and remote sensing techniques will be applied and combined with statistical and field data.

GIS and remote sensing techniques allow a spatial and temporal analysis of tsunami damage and recovery. They are, therefore, helpful in gaining information on structural damages, the character of the coastal communities, and changes in land cover.

Enhanced damage and mortality functions can be developed with this information, considering all impact and resilience factors. Moreover, socio-economic and ecological vulnerability factors can be derived to develop a GIS-based software tool to assess tsunami risk.
