Topics for assignments and master theses
Would you like to write a project or master's thesis in any of our fields with the guidance of one of our experts? Check out the task suggestions and ask if there's anything you're wondering about.
NGI actively recruits students and graduates with a geotechnical and geotechnical background. Many who have chosen a project and master's thesis in collaboration with us now have NGI as their workplace.
We work closely with universities in Norway and abroad. Several NGIers hold Professor II positions at NTNU, UiO, OsloMET and NMBU, and are often academic supervisors for students in connection with projects and master's theses and doctoral education.
Check out our suggestions for current topics and examples of projects and master's theses below. The content can be prepared and adapted by the student and supervisor.
Curious? Also, check the possibilities for summer jobs with us.

The main objective of this master thesis is to investigate the acid-producing potential of black shale mixed with other masses of varying grain size.

Benchmarking methods and tools for InSAR in urban and rural terrain
The main objective of this master thesis is to understand the differences between available InSAR processing techniques and their advantages and disadvantages for applying them to different types of displacement phenomena.

Numerical modelling of debris flow entrainment
The main objective of this master thesis is to better understand and model the entrainment of wet beds by debris flows.

Improved methods for measuring hydraulic conductivity sands and silts
The main objective of this master thesis is to advance the state of the art of measuring hydraulic conductivity in sands and silts.

Improved rockfall modelling for the design of mitigation measures
The main objective of this master thesis is to evaluate current practices and modelling tools for designing rockfall protection barriers.

Hazard zoning for small rock avalanches (volume < 100 000 cubic meters)
The main objective of this master thesis is to Investigate methods for evaluating small rock avalanches to improve our understanding of these phenomena. The thesis could help establish best practices for producing hazard zones for these mass movements.

The main objective of this master's thesis is to develop and evaluate drone-based surveying methodology and applications.

Modelling of 3D effects in Gjerdrum slope failure
The main objective of this master thesis is to investigate the strain-softening effect in a 3D domain on the computed safety factor by comparing the results of 2D and 3D calculations for the Gjerdrum slope failure.

Obtaining reliable interface friction angles in glauconitic soils for monopile design
The main objective of this master thesis is to obtain reliable values of the ultimate interface friction angle for monopile design for offshore wind turbines installed on glauconitic soils.

Hyperspectral imaging for multiscale assessments of marine litter and plastic pollution
The main objective of this master thesis is to investigate the application of hyperspectral imagery for detecting marine litter and plastics in the coastal zone near Oslo and other regions of Norway coordinated with a beach clean-up initiative.

Martian and Lunar soils characterization at very low effective stress under static and dynamic loads
The main objective of this master's thesis is to characterize lunar and Martian regolith simulants

Icy Lunar Regolith Simulants
The main objective of this master thesis is to determine the influence of ice content on the strength and stiffness of soil material on the moon.
